BRANDON COX

Sitting on the J train on my way back from a busy day consisting of the Brooklyn Circus trunk show and a performance at the Brooklyn Museum, I met a group of eclectic young artists. Don't ask me how it happened but it did, one in particular was an artist by the name of Brandon Cox. I was then invited to the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" exhibition at St. Cecilias comprised of artists from the residency Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The exhibition took place in a convent with each room a different artists showing space. Arriving to the door was the usual suspects of socializing creatives, video footage being taken and someone in a Lady Gaga esque full body jumpsuit lurking about. Exploring the space, one of my favorite pieces was down in the basement, where I found a random kitchen. Opening the door to the oven I discovered a tunnel where people could crawl through and end up in a different room. Cox's work located on the third floor dealt alot with the black image and other social standpoints. Effectively positioning himself as a force in the art world, his work is also being shown at the Garment Room in Soho. Check out more from Brandon Cox at: http://www.bcoxart.com/

A few more pieces by Cox...

SIR SLEAZE

Keeping up with what my friends over in the UK are up to I stumbled upon a crazy mix to Estelle's Freak. My boy Sir Sleaze an experimental Artist/Producer/Remixer/Songwriter remixed this cool track into an even crazier twisted party track. I heard this mix for the first time when I was gettin ready for church this past Sunday, but before you judge me the freak shes talking about is in reference to a quirky rebel personality (its crazy how easily your mind goes toward the dirty haha). Definately keep an eye on more from Sir Sleaze and his exploits, bobbing and weaving through the music world:

OMOI Store in Philly

Taking a break from nonstop graphic work this past weekend I paid a visit to a little store in center city, tucked away behind the hustle ad bustle of Walnut St. The store OMOI is a small boutique on Pine street carrying street brands such as Hellz Bellz, Uzi, Upper Playground and alot more. I got a quick second to exchange a few words with the owner Liz. She says:

"The store is on its fourth year now, about to see another birthday. I started it after I took a trip to Japan, studyng languages. I became immersed in the culture and since i could not afford to stay and live there I decided to bring them back with me and open a store to share the things that I love."

Japanese brands like Mr. ttt, and Domo have a significant presence within the store along with numerous books, cameras, jewelry and toys. Cool stuff should definately stop by if you're in the area.

MUST BE NICE ARTSHOW JUS INK X KELLISON INTERVIEW

(From left to right: Allison Kerek, Kelly Thorn, Justin Morris)

Siked for my last show of the semester at the now infamous Robinson's Urban Thrift, I wanted the viewers to get to know the awkwardness of Kellison. For this show I pretty much handed over the reigns to them to add their quirky awkward flare to it. I'm just a back-up singer in this convoluted design show. So I sat down with Kellison asking standard questions and getting back strange answers as usual. The design duo composed of Kelly Thorn and Allison Kerek answered accordingly:

How did you guys get started?
At a party in Megan Scanlin's (design friend) living room, this is how the conversation went:
Kelly: "I like how you draw, Allison."
Allison: "I like how you draw, Kelly."
Kelly: "We should draw some stuff together. Whaddya SAY, BUBS!?"
Allison: "Ok what should we be called!?"
Kelly: "How about JusInk?"
Allison: "No that's lame. What else?"
Kelly: "Kallison?"
Allison: "No.. how about Kellison!?"
Kelly: "SOLD!"
they look up to the sky, knowing this would be a monumental moment in their life.
It's just there in the air.

What inspires you?
"Hairy women. Fat men. Sweat. Blood. Boogers. Puke. Warts. Robert Crumb's art. Stinky feet. People at Walmart. Finger Monsters. Justin Morris. Claymation. Wet Hot American Summer. Midgets. Helper Monkeys. Tyler School of Art. Gold. Lil Wayne. Mist. Ghouls. Puppets. Clowns. Babies. Laughter. Farts (pfff). Insane Clown Posse. Our Moms. Momuments. Blizzards. Lizards. Typos. Wallfuls. Finger Nails. France. Hands. Poop. Face Painting. B44. George Lopez. Wrinkles. Winkers. My Cat (Kelly's). Wheelchairs. Top Hats (of the tiny nature). Miracles. Wine. Spirits. Mountains. Goats. The Mountain Goats.

Who are your favorite artists?
Robert Crumb, Kelly Thorn, Allison Kerek, Justin Morris (sometimes), Egon Schiele, Tim Burton, Josh Cochran, Dewey Saunders, Annette, Henry Darger, Eric Hibit, Bob Ross, Carson Ellis, TIm Lahan, Allison's Nephews (Wulff, Max, and Tristan), Heads of State (because they're a TEAM!), AND SO MANY MORE

What new projects are you working on?
We have a special treat for Justin Morris that we will reveal at our show. We are also going to create a claymation movie over the summer. We are a fan of shrinky dink art. We want to make videos. We're going to make two books: a quote book, and Thorny Kerekters. AND MORE. Basically, we have a ton of ideas, aspirations, goals, and dreams, but not enough time right now. This summer we'll be making everything. So much stuff it'll blow ya mind. Magic all up in this bitch.

Where do expect to go from here as a diabolical design duo?

Tightrope Video

Came home today put some pasta on the stove (broke art students thats all I have) and opened my laptop to see what was new with music and art. Came across the new Janelle Monae video. In a recent post notifying about her new single "Tightrope", an up beat jam with an old school feel. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna see people around doing the tightrope dance when this song comes on. This was a creative approach and interpretation of the song, I would have never thought of it but its dope. Give it a watch.

JANELLE MONAE COLD WAR

Hailed as one of the most promising newcomers within the musical landscape in 2010 songstress Janelle Monáe has convinced critics nationwide with her signature style. Notable collaborations with the likes of Chester French, Fallout Boy and Cee-Lo among others further underline talent of this Atlanta-crooner. With the latest leak off of her forthcoming debut album “The ArchAndroid” Monáe continues to prove that she belongs to the list o
f artist to watch out for. Entitled “Cold War” this powerful track turns in the whole package as it delivers a message and a catchy instrumental backed by powerful guitar riffs. This should easily increase the anticipation for her debut album “The ArchAndroid” that is slated for a release May 30th via Bad Boy.

PHARRELL KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT MIDEM 2010

Not needing to state his accomplishment Pharrell Wiliams was the Keynote speaker at MIDEM 2010. If you dont have the time to watch the entire video heres what I recieved from it. During his talk he was asked about all of the different campaigns and projects he was currently working on who he was working with and what exactly he sought to be accomplished from each. A few that stood out to me was his creation in KIDULT.COM and ARTST.COM and his involvement with BIONICYARN.COM. Kidult.com being a website for news catering to the 12-17 age group. A col site that encourages learning and thinking news other then the paparazzi rubbish that is often the buzz (impressed with this idea i actually posted the site on my little brothers facebook so that he could start thinking more about the world he lives in instead of obsessing over the little things). Artst.com a site that I already knew about is also an example of a great opportunity for young artist t get exposure as well as opportunities to recieve equipment or funding to fuel their dreams through contests sponsored by major brands. And finally bionicyarn.com a company devoted to creating clothing, luggage and furniture from recycled iems such as bottlecaps. Although Pharrell is a really trending person to admire and or think is cool, I admire how he is using the influence he has to not only sponsor things that are positive but also create new things that will aid the youth of today to achieve what they actually want to do.

THEOPHILUS LONDON HUMDRUM TOWN VIDEO

Definately a dope video I'll say that first. Jammin to this song long before the release of the video its an unexpected approach. For a second the part where hes in his apartment I thought there would be a part reminiscent of Michael Jackson's Beat It video but I guess not. And of course Theophilus would have everyone jammin in a karaoke bar to his own song ha. Loving the creativity in this vid.

SANTIGOLD SOTSK

Santigold explains why she decided to join the climb on Killimanjaro to fight the clean water crisis and explains the impact one individual can have to relieve the matter. In her climber blog she says she feels that issues like this are deemed not as important compared to stupid matters like the kardashians or octomom.

"Another reason that it’s appealing to me to do something like this is because the state of American culture is so upsetting to me right now, especially as an entertainer. The stupid shit that takes up so much of your time…the menial things that don’t mean anything. If I had it my way, I wouldn’t deal with all the extra. People are famous for sex tapes and having too many kids. Red carpets create an atmosphere where people feel they have to have plastic surgery to be beautiful or feel awful if they don’t. And if you’re a kid growing up in that world, you don’t know to have any interest or initiative to find out about things other than Octomom, Sweet 16 and the Kardashians. "
